An adorable pet for your floral collection, and an amateur gardener’s most obedient subject, the umbrella tree is the houseplant you didn’t know you wanted, but a houseplant you deserve to take care of. Scientifically known as Schefflera Arboricola, it’s more commonly called an umbrella tree, with a dwarf suffix attached to it for one variety.  Taking its name from the charming shape of its foliage, the umbrella plant gains its affection because it is adaptable to growing in different conditions, and it takes neglect sportively. It also bears the names octopus tree and brolly plant, so next time you hear any of these names know it is your friendly neighborhood houseplant.

Schefflera plants are incredibly popular indoor trees. Depending on the species, these plants can grow up to approximately 10 feet indoors. In addition to their impressive size, Schefflera plants also have several brilliant uses and benefits.

The Schefflera genus contains between 600 and 900 recognized species of flowering trees or shrubs. The genus makes up about half of the plants in the Araliaceae family. The Schefflera genus is named after the 18th Century Polish botanist Johann Peter Ernst von Scheffler.

Schefflera plants are woody trees and shrubs with palmate compound green leaves that look like outstretched hands. Schefflera plants can also grow as epiphytes on other trees. Allow the top 2 inches of soil to dry out before watering. Prune back if the plant becomes leggy or too tall. Pinch out new growth if you want to keep the plant small and compact. Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep your Dwarf Umbrella looking fresh and feeling fine.

How much sun does a dwarf umbrella tree need?

Compact Umbrella Trees like filtered indirect light. Provide them with at least 4 hours of light a day. They will stay healthy and grow properly if they are getting the required light.

How often do you water a dwarf umbrella tree?

Water every 7-14 days or as the soil becomes dry. This plant is flexible about watering but will be more tolerant of dry soil than overwatering. Yellow leaves are a sign of overwatering and drooping leaves are a sign it needs more water.
